Cyberpunk Culture
The cyberpunk genre first gained popularity in the mid-80s. It took significant influence from Asian cities. Cities like Hong Kong and Tokyo already looked like a cyberpunk dystopia before the genre was even created, with neon signs everywhere, advertisements on every major road, and large crowds, and has only gone up from there.
The genre also took significant influence from the 80s era. One of the main categories, the fashion style, got affected but seemed to have changed over time. First, it was about different colored layers and crazy hairstyles, but modern cyberpunk appears to lean more towards its simplistic but still futuristic clothing. It went from Punk to more tech-wear stuff.
Other aspects like the vehicles also seem to have gone from a retro look to a more modern simple one, but one thing that has not changed is the music inspired by the 80s.
The music of cyberpunk relies deeply on futuristic electric sounds. The genre of cyberpunk music is more commonly known as synth wave or retro wave.
Cyberpunk World
Cyberpunk is more than just music, style, and fashion. It’s about capitalism that has gone to the extreme. It’s about a world where the government has no power and mega-corporations own it all. Rich and powerful can even escape death by uploading their consciousness to the cloud and living in cloned bodies forever. It’s about how technology only magnifies these issues and how people rebelled against the system.
As people start having less and less privacy making a scrabble against the system against Big Brother, the eye that’s always watching. It’s about not only the technology’s effect on us but our effect on the planet. As cities become the size of States, the day sky becomes just as dark as night. Some recent cyberpunk movies like neo Blade Runner even focus on global warming and its effect on our planet.
After it rises to fame in the 80s, the cyberpunk genre seems to have revived. Popular movies, tv-series, and games like Bladerunner, Altered carbon, Cyberpunk 2077, and Mr. Robot are based on this genre. All of these show us what our future might look like. And some of them got a lot of things correct. Automated vehicles, see-through displays, holographic images, artificial intelligence taking over our jobs, people repelling against the powerful corporations for their privacy and freedom are just a few examples. We have never been this close to a sci-fi genre before.
Cyberpunk is hands-down my favorite sci-fi genre as it represents the near future. A future that one day we might experience and in many ways were experiencing right now.
